The History of the Holocaust Shoe Project

When the allied troops liberated the concentration camps in Europe during and after World War II ,they found thousands of shoes in heaping piles. The shoes had belonged to those who had lost their lives under the Nazi regime.Every year since 2000, I have been asking my students to help me collect shoes during holocaust awareness week.

My father is a holocaust survivor, the only member of his family to survive. The "Holocaust Shoe Project" is my way to educate our students about the holocaust and to do something good for our community by donating the shoes at the completion of every holocaust awareness week.

In 1945, Liberators at Auschwitz reported that the six barracks which escaped fire set by fleeing SS troops, contained 348,820 men's suits, 836,525 dresses, 38,000 pairs of men's shoes and 5,255 pairs of women's shoes.

April 28th - May 2nd, 2008 - 4, 757 pairs of shoes was collected at Summit Ridge Middle School
